Notepad has been around forever. Notepad++ has replaced it as an editor. N++ is free, it is open source, and it can deal with several languages. It is for Window systems and it has licensed use by GPL. N++ employs Scintilla, a component known globally for its powerful editing. N++ itself is C++ coded, and employs STL and API of Win32 at its purest. This gives N++ top end speed in execution and allows it to be a nice small footprint, using minimal resources. N++ is all about green, zero carbon footprint, and it has its routines and process honed to extreme limits of optimization. It is a fully featured editor, with zoom, file status displays, multiple view options, multiple documents open at once, search and replace, and so on. You can build macros for use with N++, recording them and playing them back to automate repetitive actions. You can use bookmarks and guidelines / highlighting.
