Windows 7 has a codecs package (W7CP)! It has no file-type association and has no media player, but it has everything necessary for playing DVDs, AVIs and more. Any media player you have will work with W7CP. Its only limit is your capabilities. Stream video, play movies and videos, it is all at your fingertips; you choose the codecs installed and where they are installed. They are redistributable public. Later on as you wish you can selectively de-install which ever codecs you want, and re-install them again as you want. Video streaming can occur in any of several available formats.
